This driver has the following requirements.
* This driver has been shown to function properly when used with average computer systems having specifications that conform to the above guidelines. You should be aware, however, that there are numerous other variables that can affect performance, including differences in hardware design, system configuration, and overall combination of software applications that are used. Therefore, the actual system requirements could be different than the above.
1. Start Windows with all USB cables disconnected.
(except the keyboard and mouse)2. Log on to Windows as one of the following users:
- a user whose account type is Computer Administrator
- the Administrator or other user with the privileges of the Administrators group* For more information regarding this, consult your computer system administrator.
3. Exit all applications before performing the installation.
4. Make "Driver Signing" settings.
4-1. Open the "Control Panel," and double-click "System."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Performance and Maintenance," and click the "System."
4-2. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Driver Signing" button. The "Driver Signing Options" dialog box will appear.
4-3. Make sure that "Driver Signing Options" is set to "Ignore." If it is set to "Ignore," click "OK." If not, make a note of the current setting; then change it to "Ignore" and click the "OK" button.
* Caution regarding the "Driver Signing Options" setting
<Windows 2000>
If the "Driver Signing Options" setting is left at "Warn," the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear during the installation, but you should simply click "Yes" and continue the installation.
If the "Driver Signing Options" setting is set to "Block," the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear during the installation; click the "OK" button. "Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear, so click the "Finish" button to close the wizard, and re-install as described in the troubleshooting section 'Is "? USB Device" or "! USB Device" shown in "Device Manager"?'
<Windows XP>
If the "Driver Signing Options" setting is left at "Warn," the "Hardware Installation" dialog box will appear during the installation, but you should simply click "Continue Anyway" and continue the installation.
If the "Driver Signing Options" setting is set to "Block," the "Hardware Installation" dialog box will appear during the installation; click the "OK" button. Click the "Finish" button to close the wizard, and re-install as described in the troubleshooting section 'Is "? USB Device" or "! USB Device" shown in "Device Manager"?'
4-4. Click the "OK" button to close "System Properties."
5. Install the driver.
5-1. Double-click SETUPINF.EXE.
5-2. The "SETUPINF" dialog box will appear, and the display will indicate "Ready to install the driver. ---"
* If the display indicates "The driver is already installed. ---", you can use a USB cable to connect the SC-8820 and your computer, and use it.
If after connecting the SC-8820 you are unable to use it, a problem may have occurred. Refer to "Troubleshooting."
To reinstall or update the driver, refer to "To reinstall."
5-3. Set the SC-8820's computer switch to the "USB" position.
5-4. Use a USB cable to connect the SC-8820 and your computer.
5-5. Turn the POWER switch of the SC-8820 to the "ON" position.
<Windows 2000>
* If in step 4 the "Driver Signing Options" setting is not set to "Ignore," the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear. If this occurs, refer to "the caution given in step 4-3," and take the appropriate action.
* If the "Found New Hardware Wizard" is displayed, refer to "You attempted to install using the above procedure, but were not able to."
Proceed to Step 5-6.
<Windows XP>
* "Found New Hardware" message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Wait a moment, please.
5-5-1. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box will appear, so select "Install from a list or specific location," and then click the "Next" button.
5-5-2. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install," and then click the "Next" button.
5-5-3. Make sure that "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver" is selected in the Models field, and click the "Next" button.
* If in step 4 the "Driver Signing Options" setting is not set to "Ignore," the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear. If this occurs, refer to "the caution given in step 4-3," and take the appropriate action.
5-6. In some cases, the "Insert Disk" dialog box may appear. Click "OK."
* If the "Files Needed" dialog box appear, proceed to the next step.
* If the "Insert Disk" dialog box does not appear, refer to "The 'Insert Disk' dialog box is not displayed during the installation procedure."
5-7. The "Files Needed" dialog box will appear. In the "Copy files from" area, input the name of the folder that was displayed in the "SETUPINF" dialog box, and click the "OK" button.
* If you closed the "SETUPINF" dialog box, set the "Copy files from" area of the "Files Needed" dialog box to the folder that contains the driver, and click the "OK" button. Alternatively, click the "Browse" button to access the "Open" dialog box, move to the folder that contains the driver, and click the "OK" button. Then click the "OK" button.
Example) If the driver is in the "\WIN2000" folder of drive D, you would type "D:\WIN2000."
5-8. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear. Make sure that "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver" is displayed, and click the "Finish" button.
<Windows XP>
* "Found New Hardware" message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Wait a moment, please.
5-9. The "System Settings Change" dialog box will appear. Click the "Yes" button and restart Windows.
6. In order to install the driver, you must log on to Windows as one of the following users:
- a user whose account type is Computer Administrator
- the Administrator or other user with the privileges of the Administrators group7. If you changed the setting for "Driver Signing Options" in step 4, set it back to the previous setting.
8. As described in "Before you begin," make settings so that the SC-8820 can be used. The SC-8820 cannot be used unless these settings are made.
Our tests show that occasional disruptions in the sound may occur if the following setting is not made. By making this setting, you may be able to alleviate the problem. Please be sure to make the setting before using the unit.
1. Double click on "System" in "Control Panel."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Performance and Maintenance," and click the "System."
2. In Windows 2000, click the "Advanced" tab, and then click the "Performance Options" button.
In Windows XP, click the "Advanced" tab, click the "Settings" button in "Performance," and then click the "Advanced" tab.3. Select "Background services," and click the "OK" button.
4. Click the "OK" button to close "System Properties."
1. Open the "Control Panel," and double-click "Sounds and Multimedia" or "Sounds and Audio Devices."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Sounds, Speach, and Audio Devices," and click the "Sounds and Audio Devices."
2. Click the "Audio" tab, and in "MIDI Music Playback," select "Roland SC-8820 PART A."
* If the above "Roland SC-8820 PART A" cannot be selected, a problem may have occurred. Refer to "Troubleshooting."
3. Click the "OK" button to close "Sounds and Multimedia Properties" or "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties."
4. Open "Windows Media Player," select a MIDI file, and then play back the file.
In the application(s) that you intend to use, specify the MIDI device they are to use. (For details on this setting, refer to the owner's manual for your application.)

1. When changing driver settings, always make sure to first quit all applications using the SC-8820. This is unnecessary when only checking the settings.
2. Open the "Control Panel," and double-click "System."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the " Switch to Classic view."
3. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Device Manager" button.
4. Double-click "Sound, video and game controllers."
5. Double-click "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver."
6. Click the "Properties" tab, and in the Multimedia Devices field, double-click "MIDI Devices and Instruments."
7. Select "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver," and click the "Properties" button.
8. Click the "Settings" button to access the "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver Settings" dialog box.
9. To modify the settings, make the changes and click the "OK" button. To simply check the settings, be sure to click the "Cancel" button after viewing the settings.
* For details on the setting items, refer to "About the items in the Settings dialog box."
Normally, you should leave the check box cleared.
* Note!
The modified setting will take effect after you turn the power of the SC-8820 on/off.
1. As described in "To change or verify settings," make a note of the current driver settings.
2. Delete the driver as described in "To uninstall."
3. Install the driver as described in "Installation." Set the driver settings to the values you noted in step 1.

7. Delete the driver.
7-1. Open the "Control Panel" and double click on "System."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Performance and Maintenance," and click the "System."
7-2. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Device Manager" button.
7-3. Double-click "Sound, video, and game controllers" to see the list of devices.
7-4. From the list, right-click "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver." Then choose "Uninstall" from the menu that appears.
* If the list does not show "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver," refer to "Cannot install/uninstall/use the driver."
7-5. A "Confirm Device Removal" dialog box will appear. Make sure that "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver" is shown in the dialog box, and click the "OK" button.
7-6. Close the "Device Manager," and in "System Properties" click the "OK" button.
8. Disconnect the USB cable from the SC-8820.
9. Restart Windows.
Are you logged onto Windows with the appropriate user rights?
Log on to Windows as one of the following users:
- a user whose account type is Computer Administrator
- the Administrator or other user with the privileges of the Administrators group* For more information regarding this, consult your computer system administrator.
Did you make "Driver Signing" settings?
In order to install/reinstall drivers,"File signature verification" needs to be carried out. Use the following procedure to check.
1. Open the "Control Panel" and double-click "System."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Performance and Maintenance," and click the "System."
2. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Driver Signing" button. The "Driver Signing Options" dialog box will appear.
3. Make sure that "Driver Signing Options" is set to "Ignore." If it is set to "Ignore," click "OK." If not, make a note of the current setting; then change it to "Ignore" and click the "OK" button.

Was the driver installed correctly?
If you can't use the SC-8820 even though you've installed the driver, the driver might not be installed correctly. Use the following procedure to check.
1. Start Windows with all USB cables disconnected.
(except the keyboard and mouse)2. Log on to Windows as one of the following users:
- a user whose account type is Computer Administrator
- the Administrator or other user with the privileges of the Administrators group3. Set the SC-8820's computer switch to the "USB" position.
4. Use a USB cable to connect the SC-8820 and your computer.
5. Turn the POWER switch of the SC-8820 to the "ON" position.
6. Open the "Control Panel" and double click on "System."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Performance and Maintenance," and click the "System."
7. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Device Manager" button.
8. Double-click "Sound, video and game controllers."
9. Does the display show "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver"?
If this is not displayed, refer to 'Is "? USB Device" shown in "Device Manager"?'
If this display appears, but a yellow "!" or red "x" is attached, refer to 'Does the "Device Manager" show a yellow "!" or red "x" for "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver"?'
If there is no problem with the display but the SC-8820 cannot be used, refer to "Is the SC-8820 MIDI device name displayed?"
Is "? USB Device" or "! USB Device" shown in "Device Manager"?
If installation was not performed according to the procedure specified in "Installation," the SC-8820 will not be correctly recognized by Windows, and will not operate. Use the following procedure to re-install the driver.
1. Start Windows with all USB cables disconnected.
(except the keyboard and mouse)2. Log on to Windows as one of the following users:
- a user whose account type is Computer Administrator
- the Administrator or other user with the privileges of the Administrators group3. Set the SC-8820's computer switch to the "USB" position.
4. Use a USB cable to connect the SC-8820 and your computer.
5. Turn the POWER switch of the SC-8820 to the "ON" position.
6. Open the "Control Panel" and double click on "System."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Performance and Maintenance," and click the "System."
7. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Device Manager" button.
8. Check to see if "? USB Device" or "! USB Device" is displayed under "Other Devices." If it is not found there, check if there is a "? USB Device" or "! USB Device" listed under "Sound, video and game controllers." If you do not find any such item listed in these places, it is likely that the problem is due to other causes, so please refer to other troubleshooting items.
9. If you find a "? USB Device" or "! USB Device" line, right-click and then choose "Uninstall" from the menu that appears.
10. A "Confirm Device Removal" dialog box will appear. Make sure that "USB Device" is shown in the dialog box, and click the "OK" button.
11. Start up the Explorer, select "\WINNT\Inf\Rdif1007.inf" or "\WINDOWS\Inf\Rdif1007.inf" (if it exists). Right-click and choose "Delete" from the menu that appears.
12. Disconnect the USB cable from the SC-8820.
13. Restart Windows.
14. Install the driver as described in "Installation."
Does the "Device Manager" show a yellow "!" or red "x" for the "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver"?
Use the following procedure to check.
1. Start Windows with all USB cables disconnected.
(except the keyboard and mouse)2. Log on to Windows as one of the following users:
- a user whose account type is Computer Administrator
- the Administrator or other user with the privileges of the Administrators group3. Set the SC-8820's computer switch to the "USB" position.
4. Use a USB cable to connect the SC-8820 and your computer.
5. Turn the POWER switch of the SC-8820 to the "ON" position.
6. Open the "Control Panel" and double click on "System."
* If the above icon cannot be found, click the "Performance and Maintenance," and click the "System."
7. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Device Manager" button.
8. Double-click "Sound, video and game controllers."
9. In the list, select "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver" and check whether a yellow "!" or red "x" are displayed.
10. If there is a yellow "!," exit all applications that are using the SC-8820, and then turn the power of the SC-8820 off and on again.
11. If this does not solve the problem or if a red "x" is displayed, use the procedure described in "To reinstall" to reinstall the driver.
Is the SC-8820 MIDI device name displayed?
If the device name is not displayed, exit all applications that are using the SC-8820, and turn the power of the SC-8820 off, then on again.
If this does not solve the problem, use the procedure described in "To reinstall" to reinstall the driver.
The "Insert Disk" dialog box is not displayed during the installation procedure.
The following situations are possible.
- Is "? USB Device" or "! USB Device" shown in "Device Manager"?
- Does the "Device Manager" show a yellow "!" or red "x" for "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver"?
- Was the driver deleted completely? Reinstall the driver as described in the "To reinstall" procedure.
You attempted to install using the above procedure, but were not able to.
It is also possible to install using the following procedure, but before you do so, you must make sure that the driver has been uninstalled.
1. Start Windows with all USB cables disconnected.

- the Administrator or other user with the privileges of the Administrators group3. Exit all applications before performing the installation.
4. Make "Driver Signing" settings.

4-2. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Driver Signing" button. The "Driver Signing Options" dialog box will appear.
4-3. Make sure that "Driver Signing Options" is set to "Ignore." If it is set to "Ignore," click "OK." If not, make a note of the current setting; then change it to "Ignore" and click the "OK" button.

5. Install the driver.
5-1. Set the SC-8820's computer switch to the "USB" position.
5-2. Use a USB cable to connect the SC-8820 and your computer.
5-3. Turn the POWER switch of the SC-8820 to the "ON" position.

* "Found New Hardware" message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Wait a moment, please.
5-4. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box will appear, so click the "Next" button.
<Windows 2000>
Click the "Next" button.
<Windows XP>
Select "Install from a list or specific location," and click the "Next" button.
5-5. In Windows 2000, select "Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver," and click the "Next" button.
In Windows XP, select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install," and then click the "Next" button.5-6. In "Hardware types," select "Sound, video and game controllers," and click the "Next" button.
5-7. Click the "Have Disk" button, and click the "Browse" button.
5-8. The "Locate File" dialog box will appear. Move to the folder that contains the driver, and click the "Open" button. Then click the "OK" button. (Example: D:\WIN2000)
5-9. Make sure that "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver" is selected in the Models field, and click the "Next" button.
<Windows 2000>
Then click the "Next" button once again.
* If in step 4 the "Driver Signing Options" setting is not set to "Ignore," the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear. If this occurs, refer to "the caution given in step 4-3," and take the appropriate action.
<Windows XP>
* If in step 4 the "Driver Signing Options" setting is not set to "Ignore," the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear. If this occurs, refer to "the caution given in step 4-3," and take the appropriate action.
5-10. Verify that "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver" is displayed, and click the "Finish" button.
5-11. The "System Settings Change" dialog box will appear. Click the "Yes" button and restart the computer.
6. Log on to Windows as one of the following users:
- a user whose account type is Computer Administrator
- the Administrator or other user with the privileges of the Administrators group7. If you changed the setting for "Driver Signing Options" in step 4, set it back to the previous setting.
8. As described in "Before you begin," make settings so that the SC-8820 can be used. The SC-8820 cannot be used unless these settings are made.
Are two or more SC-8820 units connected?
Use the following procedure.
1. Exit all applications.
2. Shut down Windows.
3. Start Windows with all USB cables disconnected.
(except the keyboard and mouse)4. Connect only one SC-8820 unit to your computer, and check the operation.
Was the driver installed correctly?
Did the computer enter a standby or hibernate mode while the SC-8820 was connected with its power turned on?
If the computer entered a standby or hibernate mode while the SC-8820 was connected with its power turned on, it may not operate correctly. In this case, after resuming, exit all applications that are using the SC-8820, and then turn on the power of the SC-8820 once again.
Was the USB cable disconnected and reconnected while the SC-8820 was being used, or was the power of the SC-8820 turned off, then on again?
If the USB cable is disconnected and reconnected while the SC-8820 is in use, or if the power of the SC-8820 is turned off, then on again, it may no longer operate correctly. If this occurs, exit all applications that are using the SC-8820, and turn the power of the SC-8820 off, then on again.
On some computers, if the SC-8820 is connected while Windows starts up, the driver will not be loaded correctly, and it will not be possible to use the SC-8820 via USB.
If this occurs, start up Windows before you turn on the power of the SC-8820 or connect it.
Was the driver installed correctly?
Did you make settings as described in "Before you begin" so that the USB driver could be used?
The SC-8820 cannot be used unless you make these settings. Refer to the sections on "Before you use the SC-8820 with the Windows Media Player" and "Before you use the SC-8820 with an application."
Could you have entered standby or hibernate mode during playback or recording?
If you entered standby or hibernate mode during playback or recording, it will no longer be possible to play back or record from the SC-8820. Exit all currently playing or recording applications, and switch the power of the SC-8820 off, then back on again.
During playback or recording, did you turn the power of the SC-8820 on/off, or disconnect and reconnect the USB cable?
If you turn the power of the SC-8820 on/off or disconnect and reconnect the USB cable during playback or recording, the SC-8820 will no longer be able to play back or record. Stop playback or recording, and then start playback or recording once again. If you are still unable to play back or record, quit all programs that are using the SC-8820, then turn the SC-8820 off and then on again.
Problems may be solved by making the settings shown below.
"Performance Options" settings of "System Properties"
If you wish to modify or verify the settings, use the procedure described in ' "Performance Options" settings of "System Properties".'
Such problems may be solved if you check the "Light Load" check box.
If you wish to modify or verify the settings, use the procedure described in "To change or verify settings."
* Note!
The modified setting will take effect after you turn the power of the SC-8820 on/off. Unless you experience problems, use the unchecked (initial) setting.
If the "Digital Signature Not Found" or "Hardware Installation" dialog box appears, refer to "Did you make 'Driver Signing' settings?"
If you change the USB connector to which the SC-8820 is connected, you may be asked for the driver file.
This is normal behavior, and does not indicate a problem. Use the following procedure to install the driver.
1. Use a USB cable to connect the SC-8820 and your computer.
2. Turn the POWER switch of the SC-8820 to the "ON" position.
<Windows 2000>
* If the "Driver Signing Options" setting is not set to "Ignore," the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear. If this occurs, refer to "the caution given in step 4-3" under "Installation," and take the appropriate action.
* If the "Found New Hardware Wizard" is displayed, refer to "You attempted to install using the above procedure, but were not able to."
Proceed to Step 3.
<Windows XP>
* "Found New Hardware" message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Wait a moment, please.
2-1. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box will appear, so select "Install from a list or specific location," and then click the "Next" button.
2-2. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install," and then click the [Next] button.
2-3. Make sure that "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver" is selected in the Models field, and click the [Next] button.
* If the "Driver Signing Options" setting is not set to "Ignore," the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear. If this occurs, refer to "the caution given in step 4-3" under "Installation," and take the appropriate action.
3. In some cases, the "Insert Disk" dialog box may appear. Click "OK."
* If the "Files Needed" dialog box appear, proceed to the next step.

5. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear. Make sure that "Roland SC-8820 USB Driver" is displayed, and click the "Finish" button.

* "Found New Hardware" message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Wait a moment, please.
6. The "System Settings Change" dialog box will appear. Click the "Yes" button to restart the computer.
If two or more SC-8820 units are connected, you may be asked for the driver file.
This driver can be used only for one unit at a time.
When the "Insert disk" dialog box appears, click the "Cancel" button. Then follow the procedure for "Are two or more SC-8820 units connected?"
This driver can be used with only one unit at a time.
The second and subsequent SC-8820 cannot be used. Follow the procedure for "Are two or more SC-8820 units connected?"
Display indicates "The currently installed Device Driver does not support Plug and Play."
